A NOTE TO OUR MISSIONARIES 6-4-12

HAVING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND USING DC AFFIRMATIONS HAS BEEN A THEME
OF PRESIDENT ALBRIGHT.  HE BELIEVES STRONGLY IN THIS PRINCIPLE.
WE ARE WRITING LETTERS TO OUR MISSIONARIES EACH OF THE FINAL 4 WEEKS
SHARING SOME OF OUR THOUGHTS WITH THEM.  THIS IS THE FIRST:

To: Our beloved Valiant Warriors of the Washington DC South Mission:

A principle that Jesus repeatedly taught was, “As thy faith is, so be it unto thee!”  Matt 8:13; Matt 9:29.  As long as Peter imagined himself walking on the water, he walked with Jesus on the water.  But the minute that Peter thought of sinking into the sea, he began to sink.  We exercise faith when we visualize our prayers being answered, when we see ourselves reaching our goals, when we use our imagination constructively!  When we worry about failing, we are not exercising faith, but are guilty of negative goal setting.  Our thoughts often become a self fulfilling prophecy for success or failure.

Please remember that: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”  Proverbs 23:7.  President David O. McKay taught that, “What your thoughts are doing today—you will be doing tomorrow.”  As the famous motivational speaker Earl Nightingale said, “You will become what you think about!”

Our minds are designed to push us towards our targets, and our targets are what we think about most of the time.  We are the sum total of all our thoughts and our past experiences—actual and imagined—because our subconscious minds cannot tell the difference between an actual experience and one that is vividly imaged.  That is why we can improve our actions by controlling our imagination.  As one therapist said, “As I think, I am!”  What we think about when we don’t have to think, shows what we really are.  The Lord is very concerned regarding what we think about. He has said our evil thoughts will condemn us at the last day.  We should “let virtue garnish your thoughts unceasingly,” (D&C 121:45) and direct our thoughts toward gratitude and hope.  Instead of saying, “I feel sad today,” why not declare with enthusiasm, “I am happy!”   Remember that sad thoughts make people sad. The Lord said, “Man is that he might have joy.”  You have a message of good tidings to all people, even good news!  Then we should act like it.  Negative thoughts are poisonous.  The writer Napoleon Hill (who wrote one of the best-selling books of all time “Think and Grow Rich) once said, “The presence of a single negative thought in your conscious mind is sufficient to destroy all chances of constructive aid from your subconscious mind.”  So smile! Be happy! Enjoy life and your mission to the fullest!

Remember that positive thoughts don’t just fall into the brain by accident or like weeds blow into your garden.  Positive thoughts must be injected into the brain on purpose.  That is why we shared with your some sample positive missionary affirmations for the DC South Mission.  You can add  your own customized personal affirmations.  Repeat them enthusiastically and visualize them daily.  This will help you release your brakes and increase your positive self-image and help you reach your true potential!  This, together with hard work and skills practice, will help you accelerate your growth and help you to reach your personal goals.  Remember that with mighty prayer and much faith, what the mind of man can conceive and believe, he or she can achieve!  So begin now to act as if you were already the type of missionary and person you want to become!  We love each one of you and are so proud to watch as you become such valiant warriors in so great a cause as spreading the truth here in beautiful Virginia!

Much Love,

President and Sister Albright
